6 Days between Nature and Tradition
Discover the most authentic soul of central-eastern Sardinia through a walking journey among mountains, sheepfolds, and breathtaking panoramas
We offer you a unique experience in the heart of central-eastern Sardinia, along a selection of hiking itineraries of great naturalistic and cultural value. A route designed for those who love walking and wish to discover, step by step, the hidden magic of Ogliastra.
This land nestled between limestone mountains and crystal sea has long been isolated, preserving its archaic charm over the centuries. Not surprisingly, it's known as "the island within the island" - a place where time seems to have stopped, where every step tells an ancient story.
During this week, based in Baunei or Santa Maria Navarrese, we'll depart each day to explore a new stage among the area's most fascinating trails. The proposed itineraries are more accessible than the famous Selvaggio Blu but still require good hiking preparation and some confidence with mountain paths.
Each evening, return to the designated accommodation is planned, for a well-deserved rest and immersion in typical Ogliastra gastronomy and hospitality.
PROGRAM Limestone Trek
Group arrival in Baunei or Santa Maria Navarrese (depending on the location of the accommodation you have chosen), introductions and travel briefing.
This stage follows the first section of the Selvaggio Blu in reverse.
The day unfolds around Mount Giradili, the second-highest sea cliff in Europe at 757 metres above sea level.
Starting from the Us Piggius shepherds’ hut, we descend along the Giradili ledge until we reach Fenile beach for a swim.
The ascent to the summit takes place via the passage at Forrola, with a stop for a swim at Cala Fenile.
We then gain elevation again and, along an easy route, reach the majestic spire of Pedra Longa before continuing on to Santa Maria Navarrese.
We climb along the Serra Ovra ridge, from which we can admire the Baunei coast to the east and, to the west, the characteristic baccus, the deep ravines that cut through the Supramonte of Baunei. Once at the summit, we will be able to see one of the typical ancient shepherds’ huts, architectural landmarks that represent a humble age-old culture which learned to adapt to a rugged landscape. The second part of the route is mostly downhill. Following a long series of switchbacks, we descend to the Sisine codula, the main valley floor, and by following it we reach the beach of the same name. Stop for a swim, then return by dinghy to Santa Maria Navarrese.
The second-deepest canyon in Europe is the star of this stage. From the Ghenna Silana parking area, we descend along the slope, following an easy and scenic trail. After 4.5 km, we reach the valley floor and find ourselves at the foot of Gorropu Canyon. We then enter the canyon, whose walls rise to over 500 metres. The return to Ghenna Silana is on foot or by off-road vehicle.
Following trails and ancient mule tracks, we head towards the sea, reaching after 4 km one of the most beautiful views in the Mediterranean: Punta Salinas.
From its elevation of 490 metres, besides the sweeping view over the entire Gulf of Orosei, at our feet we find the pinnacles rising above Cala Goloritzè, another of Sardinia’s natural monuments.
We then descend steeply to the beach for a refreshing swim, before climbing back up to Su Porteddu along the tourist trail.
We move inland once again, to the southern part of Ogliastra, to the village of Ulassai.
The route winds through the forests of the mountain overlooking the village, with several panoramic viewpoints along the way.
In the afternoon, there is the option to visit the impressive Su Marmuri Cave; warm clothing is recommended because temperatures inside the cave are low.
This stage is mostly downhill, though not without a few short uphill sections, as it starts at an elevation of 915 metres and descends all the way to the sea.
Shortly after setting off, we descend into Baccu Addas and, at its end, take S’Istrada Longa, the long ledge that runs alongside Baccu s’Orruargiu and reaches its most dramatic point in a narrow, breathtaking passage.
We then descend, by way of a wooden staircase, into Baccu Sa Ena, where we will see the spring and the large ancient yew tree, before reaching our finish point at Cala Sisine beach. Stop for a swim, then return by dinghy to Santa Maria Navarrese.
